St. Vincent de Paul Society

On April 23, 1833, Frederick Ozanam, with a small group of lay persons founded the St. Vincent de Paul  Society. At that time the first conference had seven members. Since then it has experienced continued growth. Today about 900,000 men and women, from 131 distinct countries and 48,200 local conferences belong to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

This society is a worldwide lay movement of universal breath, whose objectives involve them in social and charitable works. It fosters the personal holiness of its members through service to the poor. A decisive component of this society is its following a Vincentian spirituality. St. Vincent is its patron and this group has always looked to St. Vincent as it defined its spirit and objectives. From the beginning they accepted and cultivated the evangelical and Vincentian virtues: nearness to the poor, effective charity, discretion, meekness, humility of the group, zeal for the salvation of the neighbor.

Since Vatican II this society has undertaken a series of reforms. In 1975 a new rule was approved which made the society a truly "mixed group," with a greater participation of the members, open to non-Catholics, to non-Christians. In an attempt to put an end to misery and to discover the causes of poverty, this society has widened the circle of its social and charitable action.

The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of their suffering, themselves.
 

SAINT VINCENT De PAUL SOCIETY
of Sacred Heart Church of Palmerton shares its blessings through helping hands.

Part of the mission of the Saint Vincent De Paul Society is to provide food to those in need. The Sacred Heart SVDP Society serves the needy in the Palmerton area, regardless of race, color, or creed.

During 2003, over 1,350 men, women, and children received emergency food from our food pantry. Only a very small amount of the food we distribute is government food (USDA). The bulk we purchase with money from the poor boxes and our annual SVDP Society collection envelope. We are most appreciative of your generous response to the Thanksgiving food drives we have conducted in the past. However, the increase in the number of people we serve warrants asking for monthly help to replenish our pantry shelves.

We will be accepting food donations on the last weekend of every month. We will place a notice in the Sunday bulletin at least one week prior to the Sunday we collect the food. That notice will identify the non-perishable food items, paper products, and personal hygiene items most needed. The list is subject to change based on need/inventory. On the Sunday we collect, you can take the items to the main vestibule before or after any of the weekend Masses.

THE COMFORT GROUP OF SACRED HEART PARISH, is a group of ladies who make afghans and give them to the needy in our area. They are in need of wool – if you have some to donate please drop it off in the Parish Center. The ladies also accept monetary donations which they use to purchase wool. Please place any donations in an envelope marked “WOOL” and drop in the collection basket.  The ladies thank all who have supported them and their efforts

OUR MUSIC MINISTRY is an important part of Sacred Heart Parish. There are three main choirs at Sacred Heart.

The Joyful Noise folk group. Please contact Peg Duell for more information.

The Morning Glory choir. This choir sings a combination of traditional music along with some folk music. Please contact Joan Reinhard for more information.

Our Traditional Choir, which performs at our 11:00am Sunday Masses, and our Funeral Choir that sings at funeral Masses.

The Knights Of Columbus is a Catholic Fraternal Organization dedicated to charity, unity, and fraternity. Service to the community is a top priority for the order. Knights serve the community in many ways, including: collecting clothes for needy people, raising money for people with mental retardation, and helping aid our church in many ways. CACPAC - (Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches) is a combined ministry of the Palmerton area churches working together to care for those in need through a food pantry and furniture bank. Community religious services include: Christmas caroling in the park, Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service, and an Ecumenical Good Friday Service held in one of the member churches.
